Katherine Osborne Haywood Chaney passed away on October 23, 2017. Born on September 1, 1921, to Velice and Fred Osborne of Midland, Kate was the oldest of five children. Growing up during the depression, she had a strong work ethic, even riding her bicycle from Midland to Blanchester to work at Haines department store during her teen years. At the age of 21, Kate married Joseph R. “Joe” Haywood on September 21, 1942.
Kate worked at Miller’s Market where she made their famous ham salad until she and Joe opened their neighborhood grocery store on Spring Street in Wilmington in 1956 where they and their children, Bonnie and J.R., worked together for more than 10 years. Haywood's Market served not only the residents of that area but also customers from all parts of Wilmington. After selling Haywood’s Market,  she worked for Dr. Frank Plymire as office manager until she became office manager for Dr. Ruth Hayes - a position she held for 21 years.
Seven years after the death of her beloved husband Joe in November 1986, she was reintroduced by her cousin to childhood friend, Harold Chaney, and the two married in 1993 and enjoyed Kate’s retirement together until Chaney’s death in July 2003. Since then, Kate enjoyed reading books, sewing, cooking, visiting with friends and family (especially her 4 granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren) hearing about their lives and travels.
In 2006, she was diagnosed with macular degeneration putting an end to her favorite hobbies of sewing and riding her tractor to mow the yard. But with the aid of her reading machine to read recipes, she continued cooking and baking until April of this year. She never let the disease get the best of her and filled her days finding tasks around the house and listening to audiobooks, thanks to Wilmington Public Library which suppled her with thousands of books over the years. She loved visits from friends and family and could always make everyone laugh with her stories. We all will miss hearing her relate stories from her early life and the WWII era.
Kate is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (Fred) Lauer of Willoughby, OH; son, Joseph “J.R.” (Molly) of East Lansing, MI; four granddaughters: Katie (Brad) Wadington, Becca Morrison, Alyson (Jeff) Lewis and Emily Lauer; five great-grandchildren: Sarah and John Wadington, Elizabeth and Jane Lewis; and Lily Morrison; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands as well as all of her siblings including her brother, Fred, who passed away in August of this year.
Visitations will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2017, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm & Wednesday, November 15, 2017, 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home, Wilmington, OH.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, 11:00 am at the Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home, Wilmington, OH, with Rev. Marie Smith officiating.

Burial will take place in the Clinton County Memory Gardens.
