Reverend Howard F. Shiveley, age 81, of Wilmington, went to be with the Lord Monday, August 4, 2014.
He was born July 11, 1933 in West Union, OH, the eldest son of Edgar R. Shiveley and Louise (Riddle) Shiveley.
Reverend Shiveley graduated from Wilmington High School (class of 1951), the University of Cincinnati and the Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.
He retired in 1995 as a United Methodist minister after serving churches in Sardinia, Racine, McArthur, Beaver Zanesfield and Union Chapel in Middletown, Ohio
He established the Vinton County Co-operative Parrish, now known as the Vinton County Care Ministry. During his lifetime he did many things including organizing the Port William Fire Department in 1960 and the Emergency Squad in 1962 and was also the Assistant Fire Chief for several years. Over the years he served as Village Councilman and Mayor of Port William and was a member of the Sabina Village Board of Public Affairs and Village Councilman. He considered himself to be a public servant and was deeply involved with the Democratic party since his years in high school. Reverend Shiveley served on many boards and committees during his adult life. He served several years with the Warren-Clinton Mental Health advisory board, Chaplain of Community Care Hospice and the Clinton County Antique Power Club. He was an active member of the Wilmington and the Port William Senior Citizens serving as President several years and the Lions Club and Hilda Arie Eagles #1224.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Flint) Shiveley of Wilmington, OH, three sons, William (Jenny) Shiveley of Wilmington, John Shiveley of Sabina, Jim (Patsy) Shiveley of Zaleski, a brother, Paul (Charlene) Shiveley of Dade City, FL, sister, Edith Dineniger of Sabina, two step-children, Tom (Dauna) Armstrong and Amy (Gary) Collins of Wilmington. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Carolyn (Mike) Woolover of Columbus, Helen Robbins of Columbus, and Jennifer (Tony) Sturgill of Londonderry; two step-grandchildren, Jill (Chris) Williams of Asheville, NC, Jake (Stephanie) Armstrong of Grove City.His great-grandchildren are, Zachary Marcello, Erin Marcello, Brandon Woolover, Alex Woolover, D.J. Robbins, and Haley Robbins. Five step-great grandchildren, Owen Armstrong, Sydney Armstrong, Lane Armstrong, Ember Williams, and Allie Sturgill all survive.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty J. Shiveley, his eldest son, Howard "Gene" Shiveley, and a great-grandson, Jacob Robbins.
Services will be held at the Bible Baptist Church, 55 Megan Dr. Wilmington, August 6, 2014 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Josh Dixon officiating. Interment will follow in the Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington, OH.
Friends will be received at the church on Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m.
