GRACE EDNA COWGILL

Grace Edna Cowgill, 101 years, of Wilmington went ‘home on May 14, 2015 at her daughter’s home.

She was born April 10, 1914, a daughter to Peter and Mary Molly  (Fender) Guillermin near New Vienna, Ohio.  She had been married to Frank G. Cowgill.

She and her husband Frank had several restaurants in Wilmington starting with the Amble Inn on the corner by the college.  After a second restaurant here they had one in Greenfield.  When they came back to Wilmington they had a carry out on the corner of Rt. 73, where Grace did her own meat cutting; a skill she learned in early years in New Vienna at her mother’s butcher shop.  Upon Frank’s death in 1960, she bought A&W Root Beer which was renamed Cowgill’s Drive-Inn.  After selling that, she bought Wilmington One Hour Cleaners from which she retired.  She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Columbus St. in Wilmington.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda (Jay) Shaffer; two grandchildren, Teresa L. Shaffer of Portland, OR and Christopher Jay Shaffer of Beaverton, OR; two great-grandchildren, Ashley C. Shaffer and Alison M. Shaffer; two great-nephews, Jan (Joyce) Hillard of New Richmond and Van Hillard of Davis, NC; nieces, Carol Jean Griffith of Mt. Orb and Pat Van Ess of Davis, NC; also several other nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her husband Frank, sisters, Mabel Hillard, Stella (Roy) Bush, brother, Gleason Guillermin and nephews, William Hillard, and Robert (Mary Ellen) Bush.

A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Fisher Edgington Funeral Home, 97 West Locust Street at North Mulberry St, Wilmington. with Rev. Dr. Tom Stephenson officiating.
