Garey Lee (Zeke) Scott, Sr., departed this life on Sunday, August 20, 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia, after a long and brave battle with terminal cancer. Zeke was born in Wilmington, Ohio, on November 24, 1949, and graduated from Wilmington High School in 1967.
Garey was preceded in death by his son Gary L. Scott, Jr.; his parents, Chacy Scott Sr. and Elva Lucille Ward Scott; and his siblings, Johnny L. Scott, Sr., Chacy Scott, Jr., Judith Ann Scott Warner, Wayne A. (Bucky) Scott, Sr. and Farrell L. Scott.
He leaves to cherish his memory, sisters, Imogene (Rev. James) Smith, Jeffersonville, Ohio, and Maxine (Harry) Gilham, Newark, Ohio; and brother, Thomas (Sandra) Scott, Pickerington, Ohio. Three daughters, Tiffany Gibson, Atlanta, Georgia; Keena (Lydell) Samples, Lebanon, Ohio; and Sharica Clark, Orlando, Florida; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to family, Zeke also had special friends, Lee Curtis, Dennis Morton and Peter Stein.
Zeke was an exceptional football player in high school, leading Wilmington to the S.C.O.L. championship in 1966 while being named the team’s most valuable player. He served in the U.S. Army from December 23, 1976, through November 29, 1979. After his military service, Garey settled in Atlanta. Zeke was a professional painter and an avid fan of sports, supporting The Ohio State Buckeyes and everything Atlanta. Zeke became a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church as a believer in Christ, receiving Him as his personal Savior and Lord.
A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, September 1, 2017 at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, 225 Randolph St. Wilmington, with Pastor Byron McGee officiating. The Wilmington American Legion Post #49 Memorial Squad will conduct military honors at the church. The Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home, Wilmington, is assisting the family with arrangements.
