David E. (Gene) Harbert, Sr.,
age 86, died peacefully at his home in Wilmington, Ohio on Saturday evening, April 19, 2014, surrounded by his family. Gene was born on February 6, 1928, to Delbert and Bethel Barnes Harbert in Lumberport, West Virginia. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in 1946-1947. He also served in the U.S. Air Force for twenty years and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars; he retired as a Master Sergeant in 1969. From 1970 to 1984, he carried mail for the U.S. Postal Service in central Florida. Gene’s passions in life were bass fishing and camping, singing and playing the guitar, and traveling the great outdoors, especially the country roads of his home state of West Virginia, and the wilds of Alaska, where he was stationed with the Air Force from 1957 to 1960. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, whom he married on April 4, 1948 in Kingsland, Georgia,Margaret; his son, David (wife, Becky), Jr; his daughters, Linda Custis (husband, Rod), and Sandra Petrulionis (husband, Joe); five grandchildren, Chad Custis (wife, Nikki), Kelly Hieatt (husband, Mike), Tara Harbert, Jason Harbert, and Laurel Petrulionis; and one great-grandchild, Carsyn Layne Custis.  A private graveside service for family is planned; military honors will be provided by the American Legion.
