Barbara Elizabeth Weiss Cartwright,
Age 95, of Wilmington, Ohio, died at 8:30 PM, Wednesday evening, December 7, 2011at the Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington, Ohio She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Dorwin "Doc" Cartwright. Born in Madison, Wisconsin on June 19, 1916. Barbara was a 1937 graduate of Swarthmore College, where she joined the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)..
Barbara had a life-long commitment to social justice. She was a member of the Ann Arbor Human Relations Committee, and in 1975, the Washtenaw County Bar Association honored her as a "person who best exemplifies the concept of freedom and justice" by presenting her with the Liberty Bell Award for her years of work in fair housing. As a member of the Ann Arbor, MI Friends Meeting for over 30 years, Barbara worked for the American Friends Service Committee where she structured the bail-bond program for Washtenaw County. She and Doc moved to California in 1968 where she became an active member of the Santa Barbara CA Friends Meeting. She volunteered as a trainer for the Alternatives to Violence Program (AVP) for the California State Prison System, and at the age of 75, was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award at Lompoc Federal Prison.
An accomplished artist, Barbara was a set designer for the Ann Arbor Civic Theater in the 1950's, and, after moving to California, was elected president of the Santa Barbara Art Association. Her artwork hangs in the Cartwright Learning Center at the Santa Barbara City College. More recently, as a resident of the Cape May Retirement Community, Barbara's artwork has twice been selected for the annual calendar of the Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services.
Barbara is survived by her children- Patricia (Doug Woodmansee) Thomas, of Wilmington, Ohio; Susan (Peter Fremgen) Clark, of Charlottsville, VA; Peter (Brigid Hogan) Cartwright, of Durham, NC; Five grandchildren and nine great-grandsons.
A memorial service in the manner of the Friends will be held on 3:00 PM, Saturday, January 7, 2012 in the T. Canby Jones Meetinghouse on the campus of the Wilmington College with a reception to follow at Cape May Retirement Community, and in the Santa Barbara Friends Meeting at a later date. As per her wishes, Barbara's ashes will be scattered in the Baraboo Mountains in Wisconsin, a favorite family picnicking location when she was growing up.
